Course overview

This four-year degree is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to teach and work with children from birth through to the age of 12 years. If you aspire to make a positive difference in a child’s formative education years and you have a passion to work with children, this course is ideal for you.

You will gain knowledge and skills in learning and teaching in early childhood and primary schooling, with a focus on the early years (birth to 8 years).You will learn about the different stages of child development and growth in terms of teaching strategies, resources and technologies. The course also features developing critical thinking about issues and practices for responding to diversity and special needs across all domains of development and education.

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE

You will have extensive contact with schools from your very first year, with opportunities to apply theory and reflect upon your experiences. You will gain an appreciation for the diversity of students and communities, and learn to respond as a professional and confident educator.

Your course includes one hundred days of supervised professional experience in both the early childhood and primary school sectors across the four professional placement units.

External students can normally complete their professional experience in their hometowns. 

Throughout this challenging but rewarding professional learning journey, our experienced mentor educators will offer you developmental guidance and support and prepare you for a fulfilling career working with children.

Criminal history check: Students must have cleared a Police Check and/or Working with Children Check before they can undertake practice teaching. Students whose Police Check and/or Working with Children Check are not cleared by the education sectors will not be able to undertake practice teaching and will not be able to complete the requirements of the course.

  • This course is offered full time or part time and you will have the flexibility to study on campus or online, to fit in with work or family commitments. If you choose full-time study, you can complete your course in less than four years with our Summer Semester fast-track option.

As a graduate, you will be eligible for registration to teach in schools across all Australian State and Territory jurisdictions (subject to meeting other eligibility criteria such as English proficiency and suitability to teach).
  • This program is approved by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA).

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

This course prepares you to teach in childcare services, preschools or primary schools or to work in associated educational roles such as curriculum development, educational planning, educational research and policy development.

Professional recognition

This course has been accredited through the Teacher Registration Board of the Northern Territory consistent with the standards established by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership for the Accreditation of Initial Teacher Education Programs in Australia.
This program is approved with the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA).
Graduates of the course will be eligible for registration to teach in schools across all Australian State and Territory jurisdictions (subject to meeting other eligibility criteria such as National Literacy and Numeracy test for Initial Teacher Education aligned with Teacher Registration Requirement, English proficiency and suitability to teach). Graduates will be recognised as Early Childhood Teachers under the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority requirements.
