Course overview

This course prepares students to be teachers in secondary schools in line with the Australian National Curriculum. It meets both national and local need for teachers of exemplary practice committed to enhancing educational outcomes for all children and young adults. It emphasises improving the teaching-learning relationship in the classroom, raising awareness of issues surrounding Indigenous education and developing an informed, evidence-based approach to learning and teaching in secondary school settings. The course comprises discipline-specific curriculum and pedagogical studies, general education studies and professional experience. Graduates of the course also possess levels of personal literacy and numeracy broadly equivalent to top 30% of the Australian population.
This course offers 17 first teaching areas (major) and 19 second teaching areas (minor) options in secondary teaching training.
The course is both theoretical and practical, providing a sound knowledge base in the core content areas of the school curriculum, knowledge of contemporary approaches to issues in education such as inclusivity, child and adolescent development, and promoting positive behaviour, and extensive experience in school settings.
Indigenous perspectives are a particular focus with all students expected to examine specific strategies for enhancing educational outcomes for Indigenous children.
The course employs a range of flexible, multi-modal study options such as on-campus workshops, lecture recordings, online classroom sessions, and external studies.
It is recommended that applicants interested in undertaking the Music major possess Grade 4 Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) Practical and Theory. Applicants are required to contact the School of Creative Arts and Humanities on (08) 8946 7404 or email after applying for auditioning.

Criminal History Check: Students must clear a Police Check and/or Working with Children Check before they can undertake professional experience. Students whose Police Check and/or Working with Children Check are not cleared will not be able to undertake professional experience.

Professional recognition

This course has been accredited through the Teacher Registration Board of the Northern Territory consistent with the standards established by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership for the Accreditation of Initial Teacher Education Programs in Australia. Graduates of the course will be eligible for registration to teach in schools across all Australian State and Territory jurisdictions (subject to meeting other eligibility criteria such as the National Literacy and Numeracy test for Initial Teacher Registration Requirement, English proficiency and suitability to teach).
