Graduate Diploma in Child and Family Health - GDCFH - 2018

The Graduate Diploma of Child and Family Health will prepare students to practise as professional and contemporary child and family health clinicians, sensitive to the cultural needs of consumers in urban, rural and remote environments.

In addition to the traditional knowledge and skills around growth monitoring and developmental assessments, graduates of this course will understand the importance of psychosocial assessment and the central role of parents in the child's environment. The course will assist you in providing support to new parents.

You will be prepared as a reflective practitioner, skilled in consuming and conducting research and evidence-based enquiries.

  • Your role as a practitioner will be strengthened by promoting links with other services and preparing you to work in partnership with families in a strengths-based model, as opposed to the traditional problem-oriented models, commonly found in health services.
  • The course is flexibly designed to meet the needs of rural and remote students as well as those in urban centres.
  • There is a clinical component of the course, attained mainly in child health centres. Specific to the clinical experience is an additional Aboriginal Medical Service placement.
  • The course is designed to extend a student's previous professional experiences and provide opportunities to reflect on and critique knowledge, skills and attitudes in relation to contemporary evidence, research and literature and apply this to the practice setting.

As a graduate of this program, you will have comprehensive skills and knowledge to safely and competently support families within State / Territory jurisdictions in child and family health across Australia.

Health clinicians are prepared to effectively support families with children aged 0-5 years.
