Play Therapy is a counselling method for children that uses toys and playing to prevent or resolve psychological or social difficulties. Play Therapy is the most developmentally relevant form of therapeutic intervention for children because it utilises a child’s natural way of expression – play.

If you are a graduate working in the field of education, teaching, health, medicine, nursing, allied health, psychology, childcare or social work, this course is suitable to you.


  • You will demonstrate your understanding of the theoretical fundamentals of Play Therapy and therapeutic skills within the broader aspects of child mental health and wellbeing settings.
  • As a graduate you, will be able to identify the importance of professional supervision and self-care while working with clients with complex presentations.
  • Students may exit the course in the first six months after completion of four-core units to receive the award of Graduate Certificate in Play Therapy.
  • Completion of this Graduate Diploma satisfies eligibility into the Master of Play Therapy course should you choose to progress into further study.
  • This course is offered over three semester intakes
  • Full-time and part-time study options are available.
  •  The course is offered as a mixed-mode study option, or you can complete your course online.



  • Governmental departments, schools, mental health facilities and hospitals employ our graduates. Often graduates of this qualification go on to complete further study in play therapy to enhance their practice and gain professional development. This opens up an even wider range of career opportunities.
  • Graduates will be eligible for professional registration with the Australasia Pacific Play Therapy Association, meeting the competent requirements for Level 2 Associate/ Provisional/ Student Play Therapist Membership. This means you can work to become a professional play therapist if desired.

Professional recognition
