Master of Teaching - STCH01 - 2018

Course overview

This two-year Master course offers specialised professional knowledge and skills in teacher education for those who have a three-year non-education Bachelor degree. Applicants can apply for one of three educational streams: early childhood and primary teaching, primary teaching and secondary teaching. The early childhood and primary stream is designed to prepare graduates to work in a diverse and changing range of services for the education and care of children from birth to Year 7 (Primary). The primary stream of the course is designed to prepare graduates to work in a diverse and changing range of services for primary school teaching from Transition to Year 7. The secondary stream of the course is designed to prepare graduates to work in a diverse and changing range of services for secondary school teaching up to Year 12.
The purpose of this master course is to develop professional knowledge and skills for new and changing educational roles as educators; develop reflective practitioner skills; ensure continuing awareness of the environmental and cultural influences on teaching and learning; and to better understand the needs of learners and communities with diverse linguistic and cultural orientations, including Indigenous learners at postgraduate level.
Graduates of this course will possess levels of personal literacy and numeracy broadly equivalent to the top 30% of the population.
The early childhood and primary teaching stream has an early childhood focus yet is designed to allow graduates the flexibility for teaching in either early childhood or primary school settings.
Both early childhood and primary teaching stream and primary teaching stream offer primary specialisations in various subject areas.
Criminal History Check: Students must clear a Police Check and/or Working with Children Check before they can undertake professional experience. Students whose Police Check and/or Working with Children Check are not cleared will not be able to undertake professional experience.

Professional recognition

This course is in the process of being accredited with the standards established by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership for the Accreditation of Initial Teacher Education Programs in Australia through the Teacher Registration Board of the Northern Territory. Registration is anticipated to be completed by December 1, 2017.

The Early Childhood and Primary Teaching stream in this program is undergoing accreditation with the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) and is expected to be completed by December 1, 2017.
